Driven Back by The Heat

The candle ladened cakes  of which there are many around Italy  celebrate the 77th birthday of Bunga Bunga Berlusconi today. Two of them are in Naples, one for his birthday and the other to welcome the new Forza Italia branch in the city.

The cakes were unveiled at the appropriately named Hotel Vesuvius this morning. Volcanic is how our aged President and his Prime Minister Letta are after Il Cavaliere pulled his ministers out of the cabinet yesterday. He objected to the way the government was going to pile yet more tax on fuel rather than raise VAT 1% on Tuesday.

I don’t pretend to know enough about Italian politics to understand the game he is  now playing. If as seems likely the government falls then the VAT increase comes in anyway but I guess he can blame Letta for it The only way it won’t is for Bepe Grillo and his strangely named 5 star movement politicians to come together with some of Bunga Bunga’s discontented so called allies to form another government.  This would move Grillo into mainstream politics which he has always criticized and would allow Bunga to paint him as just one of them now at the election.

The big problem is that the reform to the voting system here was to be sorted by Oct 15th so any election should this government fall will be on the old system so we shall pretty well get the same crowd back and will be back to square one again.

The cakes are all inscribed Happy Birthday Mr President. Sounds familiar to me but I’m old enough to remember this

I’m also of the generation that still says I remember where I was when JFK was shot and killed. Mind you I also can say 9/11 and 7/7 as well . Oh dear.

So I guess it is watch this space or more like here we go again .

After yesterday’s very depressing stuff about Taranto I was instructed by Geraldine to find good news to report. I was delighted therefore to stumble over the Happiness table. It is the latest survey on which countries have the most contented peoples. Safe here I thought, Italians are always going on about how lucky they are to live here and quite understandably in my opinion but then again I’m as biased as they are. So ignoring most of the list I went to the top of the page and found ………..Denmark ?? the rest of the Scandinavian countries followed and then those usual suspects like Australia and Canada but Iceland in 9th ? Must be those long winter nights I guess. USA 17th UK 22nd  France 25th Germany 26th . Come on Italy I thought you’re letting the side down I need a happy story. Well believe it or not in we came……..  45th ! One of the biggest drops since the last one in 2010. Lack of life choices was the reason given apparently caused by the crisis. Nothing to do with spending almost every Sunday having to vote yet again for the same crowd of ditherers it seems.

Okay here it is the good news story to warm the cockles of your heart and bring back the feel good factor in Italy.

Candy Crush Saga the app. game taking the world by storm was designed by an Italian . Hurrah. Riccardo Zaconni is the man and he now runs a business called King. Not known for their modesty Italian men are they ? I would love to say he built the business in Italy but actually he is now based in London . This free download app. game is generating  an staggering ( to me) $850,000 a day . How ? Well if you play it you know that you spend dollars getting stuff to help you advance to higher levels. I am no good at it yet so no doubt as autumn takes hold  I shall be adding to young Riccardo’s fortune.

And so to my Suzuki Jimny. I was searching today for a new CD/Radio/GPS for it and found on Youtube a clip on it’s capabilities. The music backing it was so catchy I thought I would get you humming it too just to start your week off.
