My daughter sends me e mail pictures of her on the beach in Hong Kong soaking up the sun before heading to the Lions v Barbarians rugby. My son texts to say he is having a BBQ on his London balcony in the sunshine. My sister is undoubtably walking the beach near Eastbourne. Need I go on. This was me drenched today after tying down the various bits of furniture in the garden from the 50 kph winds in the sun-soaked south of Italy.
14C with a windchill reducing that to just 11C on the 1st of June. That’s why we live here Jonathan !! Oh by the way readers if you were waiting to watch the Lions game on TV and experienced the 10 min delay caused by the stewards being unable to empty the bars of supporters trust me you can blame my daughter. My wife always says the apples don’t drop far from the tree !
Britain is the villain scream the Italian newspapers and the UK right wing press join in the chorus. What has Britain done now I wonder. Well those pirate Brits have failed to back Italy’s law on banning plastic bags in shops and supermarkets which need EU support to enforce the fines. I had to reread the story several times. Italy has a law banning plastic bags ? Passed in 2011 ? No supermarkets or shops can have them ? Has anyone told the Italians ? Try and stop a shopkeeper or checkout person from stuffing everything into thousands of plastic bags, they look at you as if you are crazy ( pazzo).
The Minister of the Environment has called the British stand disgraceful. This is the same Minister that has just kicked the Taranto Steel Works pollution issues into the long grass by appointing yet another Commissioner to look at the problem. The other two both said close it. But hey plastic bags or people dying in droves of cancer. No brainer plastic bags every time.
The British Press ran the story with a long interview with the head of The Italian Compost Association expressing his indignation and shock at Cameron and his cronies . The Compost Association ? What have they to do with plastic bags in shops ? Well a couple of Google searches and I find he is also the head of the Association of Biodegradable Plastic Producers who will happily step into the marketing hole left by the ban. So luckily no conflict of interest there.
Well I felt duty bound to head down to the local bar in the interest of research only you understand to see if anyone there knew of this ban. No said the owner shoveling my bits I had bought from her mini supermarket into a plastic bag from a pile 2 feet high. The rest of the customers laughed . No si sa ! Nobody knows Mike. So I had a few beers. This is my tipple of choice:
Today I shall write to the Head of The Italian Compost Association and ask him to maybe just focus on one job. Italians don’t do composting. Compost looks untidy and might ruin the look of the garden so they cut, trim, prune, hack, hew and then carry it in cars, trucks and wheel barrows to the big skips that are there to receive only household garbage and fill them up. This morning they were out in force these are my two nearest.
oh and they mainly pile it all into …. yes you guessed plastic bags !
Inevitable ! Inevitabile !
