Puglia Cherries

Sorry I didn’t realise I would be called for cherry picking duty for three days hence no blog yesterday and a very short one today, Normal service will resume after that. We are expecting two days of big storms so with the cherries ripe on the trees everyone is trying to get the crop in before the cherries are beaten off the trees by the rain and hail.

We have a cherry pickers dinner tonight so I am quickly posting this before a shower and off to the cook out.  I have no idea what to do with the cherries this year as I still have a cupboard full of cherry gin, cherry grappa and cherry brandy but I have finished the jam and must try my hand at cherry vodka.

Like olive picking there is nothing even vaguely romantic about cherry picking, hanging on a rickety ladder with one hand while grabbing a handful of fruit with the other. After a few days you are feed up with the sight of them. But the dinner is fun .

My wife loves cherries so this time of year is bliss for her. Now coincidentally the Italian for bliss is felicita and it is Al Bano’s 70th birthday today  which I read this morning  so

and you thought I would play Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries.

It is also harvest time down here in Puglia. Every farmer is on a tractor cutting and harvesting grass for the cows . This is mainly a dairy area and the grass goes brown by June and  so with that and the hot sun the cows head inside till October. The grass they cut now feeds them till then. Grass grows all through the winter so the cows are out all the time unlike in the UK . The farmers now put in some long hours harvesting from 5.30 in the morning often till after midnight. They do however stop still for their long lunch break.

The Italian for cow is mucca pronounced mooka which kind of says it all  doesn’t it , a much better word than cow.

Finally I see Eddie Braben died today , he was the script writer for Morcombe and  Wise  so wrote all their famous TV shows.  This is how to do breakfast. Enjoy.
