Just to prove I do read the comments kindly posted on the blog let me answer a couple of questions from yesterday. Gerard asks about the hated IMU tax introduced by Mario Monti as a tax on first homes. This is not a tax for services etc it is just a tax on you for having the temerity to own your own house to live in . Now on this I have to admit I know little for reasons I won’t put up here. It still amazes me what does go on blogs sometimes . I read the other day on one that they were happily building “abusivo” or illegally on their plot of land and showed photos to boot. Now every single Guardia di Finanza, who are charged with uncovering fraud, tax evasion and illegal building, that I have met speaks fluent English as does every Carabinieri who has stopped me on the road. However I know a guy who does know all about IMU and will get him to post something on here with me on Sunday .The Spazzatura ( rubbish collection tax) is done at the city hall and if you haven’t paid one year when you go the next they get you for the outstanding amount. Ours is €120 so not too onerous.
Steve actually reminded me that I was going to include Euronics on yesterdays blog on buying on line. I got carried away with steam cleaners and forgot to mention it so here we go. When my neighbour said no to buying on line I, of course, ignored her and set about finding her the bargain of the year on the internet. I found a Beko machine on Euronics website for €175 instead of her Conferama price of €219. Done it thought I . Now Euronics are the first company here to do order on line and collect in store . Last year Puglia was not included but to my pleasure I saw Puglia was now on their map. I put the machine in my basket and went to order. The Italian text said not available at this store. I then tried every Euronics store in Puglia with the same effect. Plonked an iron instead in the basket same result.
There are days in Italy when you need to get out your list of positive reasons why you choose to live here and like a Catholic with rosary beads go through them while you calm down .That was one such day.
I played you a Sophia Loren tune yesterday because I didn’t know she could sing but then found this
The lady can sing. I met her one time when working for BA at Terminal Three at Heathrow. I was helping out with Meet and Greet and Sophia came through to check in and I escorted her to the First Class Lounge. She clearly had me as a lackey and handed me her cabin baggage and happily dismissed me on arrival at the lounge. Not a word was spoken, I knew my place. She was very attractive behind some pretty enormous sunglasses. A few weeks later when helping out again I was asked to meet Lauren Bacall at check in. Now years of watching black and white films on BBC in the 50’s and early 60’s had made me a real Humphrey Bogart fan
and defacto that made me a Lauren Bacall fan too . She was tall and elegant and was appearing I think in a London play. We walked up to the lounge and I told her about loving every Bogart film. On arrival in the lounge she asked if I had time to share a pot of tea with her and I of course said yes. I smoked in those days and she offered me a cigarette from a beautiful silver cigarette case. As I took the cigarette she said in her deep voice. This was Bogey’s case. My hand shook, I had just taken a cigarette from Bogart’s case, unbelievable. What a day . We had tea she was very gracious and then I escorted her to the Los Angeles flight. Been in love ever since !!
